Stella and Dot loveliness
The lovely Charlotte from Stella and Dot Jewellery is coming along too to showcase her fab Christmas sparkly range and is also running a FREE giveaway on the night too, so you could be walking home with a lovely gift for yourself!
I’m planning to hold half-termly movie meet ups on an ongoing basis! I think it’s going to be a brilliant way to catch up with your Mama friends and enjoy some down-time and escapism, in our increasingly busy lives , it’s important to look after our needs too!
When I was growing up I always had short hair, so I never learnt blow-drying techniques or ‘hair-up’ ones either. When I got to Uni I had the classic ‘Rachel’ cut and then in my ‘baby-years’ as a Mama was all about the high-pony tail, show me someone who has time for much else!
Now my Smalls can almost get themselves dressed on a morning, and if I haul my bottom out of bed in time, I can just about get it together to wash and blow dry my hair into a semi-decent state before the school run!
I was recommended a hairdryer by a friend a few years ago and I now can’t travel without it, it’s that good. I often get asked if I straighten my hair and the answer is, I don’t!
My hairdryer, along with these other two items do all the work for me, which saves me SO much time, which as a Mama is what it’s all about. And ask anyone who’s ever done my hair, it’s not naturally straight and they’ll also tell you it’s a total pain to dry!
So here are the three pink things that adorn my dressing table that save my hair-style life on a daily basis
1 – The Parlux hairdryer
The hairdryer to end all hairdryers. The Parlux are pricey, at around £100 a pop, but I’ve had mine three years already and it’s already paid for itself. It’s powerful and while it doesn’t dry my hair any quicker than any other hair dryer, it dries it much better and makes it a lot straighter.
2 – The Tangle Teezer
Not only does the Tangle Teezer save my life when it comes to swimming lessons, as the peace it buys me from the big girls screaming from it not ‘pulling’ on their hair when I use it is immeasurable, but it totally stops my hair getting split ends as it de-tangles rather than snaps the knots. We may have four of these in our house!!
3 – V05 Heat Protect spray
The V05 Heat Protect Spray is one of the best heat protectors I’ve used and I find it so much better than an oil based serum for styling too. The Argan oil ones tend to leave my hair a touch greasy, where as this one protects and leaves it shiny!
Maybe I’m drawn to pink, maybe these products are pink because the marketing folks are so clever at their jobs they know their target market spot on! Whatever the reason, they work for me and give me a little bit of joy in my life when I spy them collectively, accidentally, matching on my dressing table!
What are your go to hair items of choice that you can’t live without, I’d love to hear them!
The lovely folks at Spruce Moose in Harrogate invited me into their fab treatment rooms lasts week to try out their individual lashes treatment.
The gorgeous space they have at Westgate House, at the site of the Everyman Cinema, opposite Pizza Express, is really quite large, the treatment rooms are over two floors, with lots of space and a feeling of relaxed luxury.
I’ve never tried lash extensions before so was a little unsure what to expect but the lovely Katie set my ease reassuring me that it was a relaxing treatment, and she was totally right.
They simply attached individual false eyelashes to the base of my existing lashes with a dot of glue. The precision in the placing is key and Katie did a marvellous job with mine.
All I had to do was lay still for around 45 minutes with my eyes closed – pretty ideal when you’re a Mama if you ask me!
Katie placed a strip-pad under my eye (I guess so she could see the lashes better) and set about gently applying the lashes.
Once finished I was amazed, she showed me the finished look in the mirror and it was such a transformation, I was really surprised what a difference it had made!
My eyes were lots more defined and it made the shape of them so much nicer too, plus it was really natural, and they didn’t look ‘false’ at all to me. Just longer and lusher than before.
The aftercare treatment is really simple too, just don’t use oil based eye-make-up remover near them and be careful not to rub them, else they will come out. They’re expected to last two weeks, but will start falling out, just as normal eyelashes would over that time.
They’d be perfect for a weekend away or a special occasion, although some people have them all the time, a little like getting their nails done. I’m really tempted as I know I’ll miss mine once they’re gone!
Looks Amazing and Saves Time
Plus they have the advantage of saving you time both morning and night, as there’s no need for mascara (though you can use it if you want – I haven’t) and therefore no need to take off the eye make-up at night either! Double bonus!
I like that they make me feel like I have some make-up on, without having any make-up on and instantly make me look more awake! A real bonus as a sleep deprived Mama!
Overall, I really loved the treatment it was relaxing to have done and the benefits were really impressive.

Bridget Jones’s Baby!
Nicely done Harrogate Mama Squad!
Bridget Jones’s Baby was a clear front runner from the off, and continued to poll well across Facebook and Instagram too. I’m totally thrilled so many of you picked it as it’s one of those ones I’ve been dying to see but never got round to going to – making it a perfect candidate for the Harrogate Mama Movie Squad! Lion was a close runner-up and another film I’m also desperate to see!
If you’re choice was something else, don’t worry – I’m definitely looking to run this again, so you might be in luck next time! I still want to see all the films in the running, particularly Jackie, which didn’t seem that popular! Ha!

Tuesday 7th November from 7pm
We’ll be welcoming you in the Everyman Private Hire space from 7pm if you fancy a pre-movie drink, a catch up with your Mama squad and a peek at the fab Stella and Dot range before the flicks commence.
The film starts at 8pm and Fizz and Food can be served at your seat – what luxury, no planning, cooking or clearing away. It’s like breakfast in bed, only in the evening in a cinema, with zero guilt!
Last week I had the totally luxury of heading off on a Spa break for a night with one of my besties and while it’s always great to catch up with friends, nothing beats doing it in the comfort of a cosy dressing gown!
We went to Titanic Spa in Huddersfield which was amazing, it’s been open 10 years but it’s the first time either of us had been and it was simply perfect!
The facilities were spot on, the relaxation room was heavenly and the treatments were tip top!
The food was impressive too – I enjoyed a gorgeous pan fried seabass cooked to perfection and we stayed in their apartments for the night, which were huge, complete with a full kitchen, lounge and balcony space!
But the best thing by far about going on a Spa break is that head space you get from it! While it’s brilliant to go away on a girlie break to sunny climes or head off on a city break to hit the bars and shops what’s really nice when you’re a mum is just to simply be! And of course have a decent night’s sleep!
The two of us chatted about this, that and the other, lost hours in small talk over what was driving us nuts most about our Smalls at the moment and set the world to rights. No other break gives you the time to do that, without external interruptions from anything.
The other benefit is, of course, the treatments which mean you can actually lie down, legitimately, in the middle of the day – is there anything nicer than that? And you come out feeling totally relaxed, unwound and chilled (and a little fresher of face – bonus). A Mama’s paradise!
One thing I always notice when I go away on a short break is that I’m a much nicer person to be around when I come back. I have that slight holiday air about me, which means everything in the world looks a bit rosier, I feel a little bit more like me and the worries I came in with aren’t as huge when I leave!
You can not underestimate the importance of spending time with the friends in your life, children and families take over and you can easily loose a sense of who you are. It’s important to maintain friendships and share what’s going on in your life, the highs and lows matter and when you get chance to sit and chat and set them straight in your head you feel nothing but better for it!
Let’s face it January is pretty bleak! We all start the year with the best of intentions and believeing all the most positive memes you can find and by now, well, everything’s just sort of lapsed a bit!
My start to 2017 hasn’t been the greatest, my Granny is very poorly in hospital, the Small Boy is crying at every pre-school drop off and the noro-virus is back at Harrogate Mama Heights to haunt us again! Gah!
The finances are all a bit ‘post -Christmas’, the nights are too dark and cold to get out and the morning school runs are tinged with the internal ‘FFS’ that accompanies hats, gloves and scarf wearing!
However all is not lost! Here are three things I’ve done this week to cheer myself up which are all FREE and focus on self-care (as let’s face it – when you’re a Mama you’re so busy caring for everyone else you need to put yourself on that list too!)
1.) Went to bed at 8.30pm and caught up on Christmas Telly on the iPad
While I do love sitting mute on the sofa next to Mr P while we both flick through our iDevices and occasionally build up to an episode of a box set on the TV, sometimes I just want to watch a good period drama in peace and he wants to catch up on some NFL! So one night last week I headed to bed early with the iPad and a cuppa and indulged in ‘The Witness for the Prosecution’ – the Agatha Christie two part drama (BBC iPlayer – expires on 25th Jan). I also have ‘To Walk Invisible’ about the Bronte sisters on my watch list too (BBC iPlayer -expires 28th Jan).
2.) Went for a beauty counter make-over
I totally hadn’t planned to get a make over but I needed a new foundation, I went to the No.7 Boots counter (as sometimes the pricier brands can be a bit salesy). I just asked for some advice as to what foundation to choose and the lovely girl asked me if I’d like her to put some on for me. It was such a luxury to have someone take my make-up off with nice cleansers and take some time putting a fresh ‘face’ on. She ended up adding some primer and blusher too and by the time she’d finished (ten minutes later) I felt relaxed, refreshed and really pleased with my new make-up look!
3.) Went to a friends for tea and chats on an evening
Sometimes I get to meet the Mamas for a day time coffee with the Small Boy. But one night last week a friend invited me round to hers for a catch up on an evening. It was really chilled as the kids were in bed, no babysitters needed, and although it feels like a bit of an effort to leave the house after 8pm when all you want to do is put your PJs on, it was actually really nice to sit and chat over a cuppa at a more relaxed time of the day!
Me time is always valuable and cherished when you’re a Mama and in January it’s even more important to make some time just for yourself too! What have you been up to to beat yours? Any ideas to share?
I was chatting to someone the other day who told me that her boss had insisted she scheduled half a day a month into her diary for ‘reflection time’. Sighting that some of her own most productive ideas came from those half days. On those days she didn’t have to do anything major, just go to a movie, check out an art gallery or go for a walk just so long as it was away from the norms of work.
As well as thinking, ‘what a pretty ace boss you’ve got’ I also thought ‘what a great idea’! And one that I think Mamas should adopt for ourselves, as a time just for us. We’re so busy managing other people’s needs constantly that actually taking half a day a month to ‘reflect’ would be an utmost luxury!
So with this thought in mind I decided to implement this strategy into my own monthly calendar and stared out in rather impressive style with a trip to Harrogate’s most famous tourist attraction, the Turkish Baths! It’s an achievable goal, as the sessions are only two and a half hours long, start from £15.50 and if your other half can watch the kids for you just one short session a month, then you’re winning at life!
Harrogate’s Turkish Baths
If you live in Harrogate and have never been to the Turkish Baths you should really put it on your to do list! Visitors travel from across continents to experience them, as they are one of only seven original Victorian Baths dating back to the 19th Century still in operation, and we’re lucky enough to have them on our own doorstep!
The Baths are beautiful to behold, they are Moorish in design with great Islamic arches, glazed brickwork walls, painted ceilings and terrazzo floors (laid by the very best Italian experts). All these things combine to add to the historic fantasy qualities of the Turkish Baths.
You can not help but be amazed by the surroundings when you’re in them. I loved the intricate tiled mosaic floors, the marble carved sinks, and the glazed walls. It’s such an inspiring environment to gaze around. I love all the history of the Baths, that the facilities have been there for such a long time and they’re all still in great working order. I love to sit and wonder who has sat there in the years gone before me and whether the same thoughts wandered through their heads as they took time out for themselves.
How it Works
The Baths work on a staged heat process. You start out in the relaxation area called the Frigidarium this rest bed area has a temperature of around 35 degrees, which helps your body adult to the temperatures of the Baths before and after you enter them. A pretty perfect temperature for me (I like it hot).
Then there are a series of three heat chambers, each divided by a set of heavy chenille curtains. The heat is a dry heat, not as dry as a sauna that come sometimes take your breath away, but it’s not wet like a steam room.
To start with you enter the Tepidarium (the warm room) which get to a heat of around 45 degrees which heats your body to prepare it for the more intense heat ahead. The next chamber is the Calidarium(hot room) which increased to around 55 degrees which helps your muscles relax further and finally there’s the Laconium (Hottest room) which reaches temperatures up to 70 degrees at which the heat helps purify and detox your body.
When you’re in each chamber you just relax on one of the benches or chairs, chat with a friend, read quietly or sit in reflection. For me having that undivided time to chat with a friend is the perfect tonic to accompany the relaxing experience. It helps gets things off your chest that you didn’t even know you were holding on to!
In-between each chamber the idea is that you cool off by visiting the Plunge Pool which at 20 degrees improves your circulation and flushes out toxins in the muscles and provides a toning effect. I can tell you it feels a lot cooler than 20 degrees when you have been lolling around in 70 degree heat! It is officially invigorating! There are also hot and cold showers, to help you cool off in-between hot bursts and also a separate Steam Room which has eucalyptus aromas in.
What you need
The Turkish Baths run on sessions both day time, weekend and evening. Each running for three hours and it’s best to book as it does fill up and numbers are capped so that everyone can enjoy the experience without over crowding. There are mixed sessions, where you need to wear swimwear and single sex sessions, where you don’t! Prices start at £15.50 and increase to £29.50 at the weekends. You are provided with a towel, so all you need to bring is your swimwear, £1 for the lockers and any shower products you might like to use for after the Baths. Hairdryers are provided and hair straighteners there’s space to do your make-up too. It does seem a bit unusual doing your make-up and hair in a more open area and when it’s a mixed session I was taken by surprise to see men around, but no more than surprised!
The relaxation beds are a lovely space to wind down after your session and become fully relaxed and chat quietly.
I loved my experience at the Turkish Baths, it’s so lovely to be a part of the history of our town in such a tangible way. It’s also an enormously relaxing experience, perfect for any Mama out there and in such beautiful surroundings. It’s great to sit down, feel warm to the bone, think by yourself or chat through your worries of the moment with a good friend. I would highly recommend going, or popping a session on your Christmas list!
Disclaimer: The Turkish Baths invited me to try the Baths with their compliments but the views are my own.
I’m just back from an amazing morning at Jaeger in Harrogate! I blogged about how Jaeger has changed in recent times and how much more fashion forward it now is. The store have got so many gorgeous pieces that you would have never imagined seeing in the ‘old’ Jaeger, at prices that are not as high as you would imagine!
The team is headed up by Michael, the Store Manager, and each and every one of the assistants were friendly and helpful. Not at all as you fear they might have been in years gone by! The staff know the brand, and their beautiful range of stylish clothes, inside out and have the time and enthusiasm to share their expertise with you! The lovely Zena guided us around the collection when we were in store.
It’s really well worth bobbing in next time your in town and allowing yourself a good chunk of time to browse and try things on you might not normally go for! You’ll really be surprised by how they’ve changed and how approachable the staff are. Anyone going in would feel like they’d had a ‘personal shopping’ experience – with a relaxed style!
This coat was my favourite piece of the day. Love, love, loved it! I never would have imagined I’d have picked something like this up in Jaeger! It’s simply gorgeous and so en pointe at the moment! It’s made from boiled wool, making it really warm, yet light and I felt uber chic and on trend wearing it. It’s the sort of coat I know I’d wear for a long time to come and will become a classic piece!
Their beautiful cashmere was as timeless as ever, I remember by Mum buying me a Jaeger cashmere hoody for Christmas when I was about nineteen and I wore it to death! I had so many lovely compliments on it, I even remember them now! That’s when you know you’re wearing something special and people notice the quality.
I tried on this beautiful grey cashmere jumper when I was in the store today and it brought back all those memories. I think if you’re buying a staple piece it will be a wardrobe classic for years to come, although expensive (this was £199), it’s of a quality you just can’t buy for that price elsewhere. You can feel it straight away when you put it on.
I know other high street stores sell cashmere, for a fraction of the price, but, in my opinion, the cut, fabric, styling and quality is no where near as good as in Jaeger. You really have to try them on to believe it for yourself and to see where the cost justifies itself. It really is so nice to wear a little bit of luxury every day!
The thing that struck me most in the store was how fashion forward the brand was. I tired on a black jumpsuit that fit perfectly – which would be a statement piece as an evening outfit for an event that was so much more stylish than a run of the mill dress!
I LOVED almost all of their coats, which range in price from around £175 – £399 – which I know is expensive, but they are the sort of coats which would last you at least ten years, maybe more! The coasts were SO much more stylish in every way then the seasons ‘on-trend’ pick from cheaper high street stores which you may end up replacing year on year!
This was my favourite! Wish I could have bought it – very simply stylish and elegant! It fit perfectly! You can see it oozes refinement and style! It’s one of this years best sellers for them!
They had some fab Autumn throw-ons like this poncho (£199) which I would love to pop on to do the school run in!
And my favourite piece, and something I couldn’t resist bringing home, was this cute little black dress – technically a ‘tunic’ (£110) from their ‘Laboratory’ collection which is described as ‘Contemporary. Cool. Covetable. A limited-edition capsule collection’.
They are easy to wear pieces, that you can throw on, wash easily and hang to dry! Best of all everything in the collection looked amazing and fashion forward!
I know I will wear this dress for all sorts of occasions, dressed up with heels, dressed down with leggings and flat ankle boots or with trainers. For date night dinner, for drinks with the Mamas, for meetings, for family events. It’s immensely wearable!
It’ll be something I wear and wear, because I love it, it’s SO easy to wear (very forgiving) yet it’s just a little bit different and something I know people are going to ask me – where did you get that from?!
There were also some fab accessories, which would make the perfect Christmas gifts for a hard to buy for Mama. I ADORED this bright yellow clutch (£99) a perfect evening bag against a black dress! The pop of colour would make all the difference to an outfit! I also thought their 3D printed jewellery from Wonderluk was pretty fab too! The earrings (£40) have been a particularly good seller!
Jaeger also sell a great denim range all designed by Donna Ida, denim design goddess. Their jeans were a beautifully soft, yet robust enough that they would be easy to wear, I also thought all the intricate touches that went with the pieces in the denim collection were well styled too. This jumper had star detailing on the back – which gave it much more of an edge that your average black wool jumper!
There really were so many items I could have come home with – were it not for the price of course! But when I compare prices, Jaeger’s not so much different to similar high-end high-street stores in town. In fact I think a lot of their prices were much better value for money and I know that it would be getting something worth the value – if that makes sense!
I think if you’re looking for something special, are wanting to treat yourself (or someone else) or for a birthday or Christmas gift you would definitely find a wardrobe staple, with a fashion focus, that you’d wear day in day out, for years to come. The quality, style and range and the approachable, knowledgable staff are all second to none! It’s certainly worth a visit next time you’re in town.

I spent some time with Harrogate Jamberry Nail consultant Kim Doan-Nim who showed me how the USA nail sensation is taking over here in the UK!
I love my nails to be looking nice, it’s not always achievable with small children as I spend a lot of my time washing up, wiping someone or something and washing my hands. But when I get the chance I love to have shiny, pretty, nails – like the grown ups have!
So, I was really excited to speak to Kim Doan-Nim who’s a Harrogate Mama herself about her new business venture that she’s working on with Jamberry. Jamberry are an American company that specialise in nail wraps. Kim is working as one of their consultants so she took some time out to chat to me all about Jamberry and their wraps!
Jamberry nail wraps are vinyl nail wraps that are heat and pressure activated and are super easy to apply yourself at home, you don’t even need any specialist equipment! They’re mainly for adults but they do a really cute kids range too, that my girls went nuts for!
What’s great about the wraps it that you don’t just have to stick to one colour like with traditional nail polish. The wrap designs are delicately detailed and intricate, something you could never achieve with just paint alone! There are over 300 designs to choose from from simple and chic to sporty and runways looks, there are so many available!
You can also mix them up and have all one design or choose to have accent nails or alternate designs! There are so many combinations, it’s brilliant! That means that you can be totally unique in your look, as chances are no one is going to have the exact same combination as you!
Kim came over to show me how to get started and my girls loved joining in with the fun too!
You simply make sure your nails are clean and polish free first. Then you can give them a quick buff, you choose your wrap design and then you’re away!
After choosing the right size wrap for each nail you just peel the nail wrap off the transfer paper, cut it in half, warm it using a hairdryer or heater and carefully place it on your nail.
Then you smooth it out with your fingers, heat it gently again and smooth it out with a cuticle stick. All that’s left to do is trim the end of the wrap and file it down using a glass file to remove the excess! It’s really very straightforward.
It’s miles quicker than painting your own nails, there’s no mess or smudges left on your fingers and there’s no drying time so you can get back to what you were doing straight away!
The wraps are also toxin free so they’re safe for children to use too, they last for they last for up to 2 weeks on fingers and up to 4-6 weeks on toes! Which is miles longer than I get out of normal nail polish, which sometimes only lasts around 24hrs on me!
The kids wraps (Jamberry Juniors) are also £15, but they end up getting 5/6 manicures out of a sheet and 3/4 pedicures (depending on the size of their nails). They’re suitable for age 3+ to around 8/9 years (due to the size of the strips)!
You can buy extra equipment if you want to from heaters to cuticle kits, but to get started all you need is a set of wraps and a hairdryer!
It was really lovely to get to chat to Kim about her business and how she’s fitting it in around her young family of four. It was also lovely to spend that time with my girls doing something fun and girly together, I could see it working really well for a kids party (or at a grown-up one for that matter!)
Kim hosts online and at home parties too, you can contact her if you want more info about how they run and she is also offering business opportunities to join her team. Kim loves being able to work her Jamberry business while still getting to spend time with the kids. Plus it gives her the chance to meet amazing supportive and inspiring women from local mums to women from around the globe!
I’m thrilled with my finished nails and am already browsing the catalogue for new designs to try!
I discovered some gorgeous gifts for Mums a couple of weeks ago when I popped in to Harrogate’s Home and Gift fair. I was looking to see what Yorkshire suppliers and lovely Mama products they had on offer there. Here’s a little round up of some of the gorgeous bits and bobs that I found that Harrogate Mamas (and all Mamas) would love!
Dialectable – Giftware
I met the lovely Julia from Dialectable who designed and manufacturers these brilliant Yorkshire products. You can also buy them in Harrogate from Send it With Love on Leeds Road if you don’t want to order online.
I also met the delightful Holly Francesca who is a London illustrator. She had designs these beautiful maps, the one of Yorkshire is simply beautiful. You can order it online from her website for £34 unframed.
Holly also creates bespoke orders if there’s somewhere you’d really like featuring for a special gift or party/wedding invite.
She also creates these darling ‘educational’ prints which are far nicer than some of their gaudy counterparts. They’d look super pretty in a little one’s bedroom.
Check out her website for more loveliness!
Up In Lights – ‘Light-Up’ Decorations
I just loved this neat idea from Smiling Faces, whose retail arm is Up in Lights, of this light-up bunting! It’d be super cute for a special birthday or a celebration party. The letters have some LEDS popped into them making them sparkle and shine! I’m a sucker for bunting as is, so this added value really caught my eye! From £15.95
Their individual light up letters are fab too at £10.99 each. They take 2xAA batteries and can be switched off so they’re great for a kids bedroom or even taking outdoors for a BBQ – although they’re not weather proof!
I also love a good light box at the moment. I think they’re set to be a big Christmas hit with the tweens, teens and Mamas out there! There’s come in at £30 and come with 69 black letters.
Which is your favourite? I’m torn between the Yorkshire Goddess Apron and the light up letters! They’re all pretty gorgeous though! Top finds from Harrogate’s Home and Gift Fair.
