There are Famous Five Themed Holiday Activities every day over the summer holidays. They include a garden trail, Storytelling every Tuesday, Craft workshops every Wednesday and outdoor workshops every Friday.

Giant Picnic Party

On Thursday 11th August there is a giant picnic party with games and music to celebrate what would have been Enid Blyton’s 120th Birthday.

Yorkshire Day

To celebrate Yorkshire Day in the gardens, on Tuesday 1st August, there are adventure games in the gardens with activities to take part in, storytelling and faceprinting from 11am to 4pm

Last year’s Yorkshire Day fun!

Famous Five Immersive Theatre

From the 10th to 12th of August there will be an evening of family friendly outdoor theatre with Gobbledigook Theatre, taking inspiration from the stories and adventures of the Famous Five. The show starts at 6pm and lasts an hour and a half with a 20 minute interval. Tickets are £18 for adults and £12.50 for children and need to be booked in advance.

Bolton Abbey

Robin Hood Production

There’s a brilliant production of Robin Hood at Bolton Abbey from 27th July to 6th August. It’s a ‘promenade style’ so you move about with the show. Performances start at 2.30pm and 6.00pm and more details can be found online. Tickets are £18.50 for adults and £12.50 for kids and include entrance to the Abbey grounds.

The Family Cycle Zone

The Family Cycle Zone is in an enclosed field adjacent to the Village car park. It offers a safe area for children to cycle, away from the hazards of traffic and pedestrians. With “paths” cut through the grass and road signs to mark the way, children can enjoy endless fun maneuvering the roundabout and junctions!!! This is the perfect spot for your little one to gain confidence and find their balance. Please bring your own bikes. This is a free activity, the Estate admission fee applies.

Family-Cycle-Trail-4-Emma-Garclay.jpg

The Welly Walk

The Welly Walk is another great favourite. With tree climbing, tunnels, slides, bridges and beams, amazing fun, forget being clean!!! Follow the Welly Walk signs and enjoy a free woodland adventure trail from the Stepping Stones to the Cavendish Pavilion. This is a challenging adventure and some obstacles are not suitable for all age groups. Children must be supervised at all times. Tree Climbing £3.00 per climb – tree climbing takes place every weekend and everyday during the school holidays.

Ripley Castle and Gardens

Ripley Castle and Gardens are a beautiful place to visit with the Smalls – you can read all about it on my blog post Visit Ripley Castle Gardens with Kids for Free!. The best part is it’s totally free to enter on weekdays too. We tend to tie the trip in with a stop at the world famous ice-cream shop or a cuppa and a cake at the cafe to keep everyone in high spirits for the day! We sometimes take a picnic too.

harrogate-mama-harrogate-mums-ripley-castle-ripley-castle-gardens-for-free-harrogate-img_9020.jpg

In the summer you can visit the Castle for a special children’s tour every weekday. Prices are £15 for two adults and two children on a weekday and the family tour is at 1pm.

Ripley Cycle Path

We have been known to cycle to Ripley too along the cycle path from Harrogate. You can read all about that on my blog post Cycling between Harrogate and Ripley with Kids – what it’s really like.

Emergency Refuge and Springboard Day Service

The charity runs a homeless hostel on Bower Street, which houses 16 people and acts as an emergency refuge for rough sleepers in accordance with the No Second Night Out scheme.

They also run a day service called Springboard in Harrogate town centre, providing food, shower facilities, activities and one-on-one meetings with support workers that are designed to help rough sleepers get the help and advice that they need to get back on their feet.

Interested in volunteering?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an experienced volunteer, or just a passionate member of the local community, they are always looking for more volunteers, and would love to hear from you!

The main areas that they need volunteers to help with are:

  • At the Springboard Day Centre, serving food, maintaining their clothing store and assisting staff with supporting the people engaging with our services.
  • At the Hostel, assisting staff in the evenings (between 7pm and 10pm)

CAU – A Family Friendly Brunch Spot, who knew?

Father’s Day Brunch

Last Sunday, for Father’s Day, the Smalls and I headed out to CAU Harrogate for brunch. We had no idea that CAU served a brunch offering, having thought it was all steak, burgers and Argentinian dinner for grown-ups, how wrong we were!

Harrogate Blogger, Harrogate Mama, Harrogate Mama Blog, Harrogate Blog, CAU, Restaurant Review, Brunch, Fathers Day, Blogger, Harrogate, Mama, Blog,IMG_0643.jpg
Father’s Day Family Fun at CAU

The restaurant serves a lovely offering for families, across all its menus and brunch was no exception!

Kid Friendly Brunch

We were greeted by friendly staff, accommodating us to sit outside in the glorious heatwave of sunshine, with pretty views across to the library gardens. The Smalls were presented with their own kid-friendly menus which doubled as colouring and we were all offered much needed water!

Views over Harrogate’s Library Gardens in the sunshine

The grown-ups menu looked perfect too and we quickly ordered more drinks, a tropical smoothie and a pot of tea for me and chocolate milkshakes for the big girls! By this point we’d soon realised the error of ours ways by sitting outside in the searing heat and opted to move inside to a cooler, fresher air-conditioned inside space! Much to the waitresses delight – I’m sure!

Harrogate’s CAU

The inside space is bright, stark and modern. We had to admit to feeling a little like we were on holiday in our own town. CAU has a distinct continental feel to it, with polished floors, mirrored surrounds, high backed padded booths and kids coveted swizzley chairs!

Menu’s for All

The Smalls had no problem choosing their brunch offering, opting for pancakes with Nutella – what’s not to love? And one of the big girls went for the burger from the kids’ menu (which is also served all day).

Chocolate Milkshakes for the big girls

The man of the moment plumped for the All Day Breakfast (well if not on Father’s Day then when?) and I decided to go for the sweet potato pancakes with spinach and poached eggs, with a side of peach yoghurt and granola.

CAU Breakfast

The pancakes were a touch on the small side for my big girl, but just perfect for the Small Boy. So we ordered an extra Bacon and Egg flatbread just to make sure we were all properly full!

Bacon and Egg Flatbread

My burger-loving child declared her burger to be the second best in Harrogate. And she should know as she always orders a burger! Ha! (I’m going to ask her to guest blog her top three places for burgers in town! ) So she was thrilled with her meal.

Kids ‘100% Grass-fed’ Beef burger

Mr P’s breakfast was good – he enjoyed it and since it was a day to spoil the Papas in the house CAU offered all the Dads a complimentary bottle of larger each, which was well received and a nice touch I thought!

Coal roasted peaches with granola, yoghurt and honey

My sweet potato pancakes were delicious too – the eggs were cooked perfectly and the flavour combination spot on. The peach granola was a touch on the sweet side for me with the added honey, coconut and peaches, but was a welcome cooler and refreshing choice on such a warm day!

Family Friendly

Overall we’re really excited to head back to CAU – to try out the rest of their menu and now knowing they’re family friendly too. It’s great to know they offer such a tasty brunch till noon and that their outside space extends around the side as well as the front of the building. Turns out CAU is not just for steak loving grown ups and that the whole family are welcomed from morning till evening to try all sorts of tasty treats.
